THCA (Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid):
THCA is the non-psychoactive precursor to Delta-9 THC found in raw cannabis plants. When exposed to heat (a process called decarboxylation), THCA converts to Delta-9 THC. Under the 2018 Hemp Farm Bill, THCA itself is not considered a controlled substance as long as the hemp product contains no more than 0.3% Delta-9 THC. Therefore, products containing THCA derived from legally grown hemp are also legal, provided they comply with this THC limit.
Delta-9 THC:
Delta-9 THC is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis. The 2018 Hemp Farm Bill allows hemp and hemp-derived products to contain Delta-9 THC as long as the concentration does not exceed 0.3% on a dry weight basis. This means that hemp products can legally contain small amounts of Delta-9 THC, as long as they stay within the specified limit.
